SpectatorWhen John Rooke Corbett compiled his list of summits between 2500 ft and 3000 ft in the 1930’s he made a clear rule that to be a Corbett, a hill must have a drop of 500 ft on every side. Sir Hugh Munro had never published any objective criterion for what constitutes a separate “Munro” summit, and none is known. One good example is Beinn Bhreac (Cairngorms) where the drop before the next Munro is only 81 metres.
Thus the Munros have always had a subjective element. They serve as a stepping stone to learning about the Highlands, and whether or not a particular spot reaches the “magic” number is a little beside the point. So I always suck my teeth a little when these tales come out of wee men fiddling with their equipment. ANDREWSpectatorIt seems as though we have found the answer to the Fox Quiz, at least for the time being. I had wondered whether the normal single room at the Knavesmire might be a little too busy to accommodate us as a group. However it worked well enough last night, and we had a nice welcome. Word is that Mr & Mrs Weston are happy to have us and could open up a function room in case of need. So the motion was passed by acclamation from those present……we’re now at the Knavesmire unless any bad circumstances arise. !!
It remains to be seen what will happen on the handful of Thursdays when there has been York Races but one way or another we expect to get around that.

ANDREWSpectatorIt would indeed be annoying to have to pay to go to the pub !! I remember paying on parking meters to go to the Bay Horse, of course.
An issue maybe for many, including out of town members: those of us who suffer the joys of surviving under City of York Council may have York Card type passes for free parking after 6pm
ASpectatorI am not certain of what I’ll be doing on Thursday 27th.
So not wanting to be thought negligent when the call of duty is heard, I popped in to the Knavesmire tonight about 7.30pm, and came away with somewhat mixed feelings.
My pint of Landlord was fine (there is also Copper Dragon) and the pub has an older relaxed atmosphere which we like. Lots of car parking 5 mins walk.
However essentially there is just ONE main bar; so there’s not a space to call our own, especially if it should get busy. There is a large Games Room—– but not for a Club meeting. There is a small seating area by the stairs…. 2 fixed tables rather like being in a train.
Another bar at the rear was closed and not in use.
If it were to be opened specially for us, we’d be a bit lost in it….. and it would be a big thing to heat just for us.
So overall, its an OK pub I think, but feels a bit like the wrong trousers unfortunately.
Theres definitely a case for further research. I don’t think I’ve ever been in the Old Ebor……….
Or whats the Bay Horse like nowadays ?
