SpectatorI’m posting to add to Penny’s paragraph about the Committee’s plan to have a rolling slideshow at the Christmas bash, aimed at reflecting the 70 years of York MC since 1948, and to invite contributions from everyone.
We have material available from 1988 to present, plus a small number of earlier photos.
As a benchmark, if we had 480 “slides” shown for 15 seconds each, that would run for 2 hours. Thus two cycles in the whole evening. But thats’ a lot of work to get together, so more likely it could be 360 pictures and 3 cycles. So for the 30 years from 1988, that would allow a MAXIMUM of 12 to 16 slides for each full year.
So if you have pictures of people or events which you think are of general interest, please get them to Matthew Diggle this month. It would be better if pictures could be captioned for the benefit of viewers. (as below).
Remembering, please, that we will try to balance the pictures across the years so not to swamp the show with an imbalance of shots from very recent years
Thanks All

SpectatorSo as previously advertised, the last dance on my card – before my next hand operation – is the weekend of 10th – 11th November.
PLAN A. If the forecast is reasonable, we will head to the Highlands with the object of reducing Steve Green’s outstanding Munro commitments. Now with the exception of a “bike and camp” trip south from Deeside (in the spring/summer time) the outstandings are all towards the west coast. Good job we’re not looking at this coming weekend, then !!PLAN B If the weather is really pear-shaped, we will once again head to Great Gable to summit before 10.50 and participate in the Remembrance at 11.00.
No doubt the event will be thronged this year as of course it will be the 100 years anniversary since the Armistice itself. As usual it will be a question of watching the “Weather for the Week Ahead” from Sunday and deciding which way to jump on Wednesday (ish)

SpectatorThere are various videos etc on-line and usually a series of BMC Winter Skills lectures to take in.
As a quick checklist, to have a reasonable expectation of safety on Scottish mountains in winter a PARTY should possess:-
Ability to navigate with map & compass in bad conditions and low visibility when paths and other landmarks may be snowed under.
Knowledge of sources for weather info and snowfall patterns, erosion and deposition factors, and ability to interpret these into likely snow conditions and avalanche risk.
Ability in the field to recognise cornice dangers and avalanche-prone slopes.
Correct personal equipment for all party members.
Practice in self-arrest using the axe, and in use of crampons. These things are learned over a period of time. So it’s best to make sure that you are always out with someone who is competent in these areas until you have got a good grip on them yourself.
An issue for novices is to get self arrest training; because others often have their own personal objectives (like a mountain or a climb)

SpectatorThis weekend in the Highlands looks like being windy and cold, but at last an end to the highlands rainfall with some clear intervals and bursts of sunshine. So 4 or 5 of us are off to Crianlarich. Last Call !
