    Dear all,

I’m interested in people’s opinons of where to take novices.

I’ll be taking two groups of (mostly) novices to Brimham on 7th September – one group in the morning and one in the afternoon. Given the restrictions I have o my qualifications, I can, at any one time, supervise three bottom ropes, one top rope or one abseil.

I’m restricted to the line of pinnacles between Cubic Block and Fag Slab. Climbers must be able to walk off at the top of the crag with no down climbs.

At the moment, I’m thinking of taking the groups to the Cyclops area and rigging as follows:

    Bottom ropes:
    Cyclops S 4a
    Centre Point D
    Slab Arete VD

One of these as a top rope:
    Long John’s Rib HS 4b
    Jackdaw Wall HS 4b
    Gordon’s Proffer HVS 5a

The area’s good for admin and let’s people watch their friends topping out / falling off which is always fun!

Alternatively, I might go to Cubic Block but the grades are a touch higher and the down climb is a bit less safe.

    Any thoughts? Any other areas?

    All advice happily received!

I’m sure you are on the right lines with Cyclops. Cubic Block is deeply unsatisfactory for novice groups because of the top exit /slither. Some years ago many of us with papers helped at abig event which those in charge decided to lower off the Cubic routes. I thought that was not a good experience for the schoolchildren involved. It is possible to suggest an alternative agenda around Lovers Leap eg Lichen Slab / Lost Corner / Cracked Corner / Difficult Crack however the Cyclops area is surely better for management of several routes in a compact area.

    Hi Giles

I’m happy to help out on the 7th Sept if you need a hand? I’m back in the country and free all day. Although not qualified I did my SPSA and ML years ago and recently did the new RCI training course if that helps. I’ve got ropes and full rack for setting up etc if needed.
Just let me know if you want a hand that day? Also happy to give anyone a lift from Harrogate to Brimham.

    Jez,

That’s very kind but unfortunately I’m not allowed to employ civilian instructors.

    Many thanks,

    Giles

    Andrew,

many thanks for confirming my views on Cubic Slab. Lover’s Leap was very tempting but I think it’s better for leading rather than top and bottom ropes.

It’s nice that we agree on Cyclops!

    Cheers,

    Giles
