Another trip to Italy is being planned for ice climbing in the new year. We had a brilliant time last year so we figured it would be great to do the same again. Dates are set to depart on Tuesday the 26th of January, returning on Sunday the 31st. Flights are with Ryanair from Manchester to Milan and then by hire car to Lillaz where the same accommodation as last year is available.
A copy of last year’s trip report is here: https://www.yorkmc.org.uk/lillaz-ice-climbing-20th-to-25th-jan-2026/ The costs for flights and accommodation are on the report and have remained pretty much as noted.
Groups of four are the best way to keep costs down and to manage the trip. Myself, Phil H, Derek W and Paul M are already booked in as a group. I have had several expressions of interest from the club and if you’d like to confirm a place get in touch with me and I will aim to put together at least one more group of four. Flights are best paid for individually and accommodation, hire car, parking and fuel payments are by agreement within the group.
I appreciate that it is a long way ahead, however, flights and accommodation are limited so in order to secure adequate places it is best to start planning early. Note that to get the best out of the trip it is recommended that you have some experience of ice or winter climbing and the appropriate fitness, skills and equipment. If you are new to the sport it should be possible to book a local guide/instructor to get started whether individually or as a pair. Downhill or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is also available around Lillaz and information is available on the internet such as here: https://www.wikiloc.com/trails/snowshoeing/italy/valle-di-aosta/cogne .
If you’re keen to go, please let me know asap.
Cheers!
