Kinlochleven and the Mamores

Kinlochleven Sept 09

Dolly and I decided to head north the weekend of 18/19th Sept to Kinlochleven and play on the Mamores and try and increase Dolly’s Munro count.

Setting off after work on the Friday we hit the Clachaig in time for a pint and a chin wag with some friends who I knew were in the area and then on to our accommodation in the West Highland lodge where we discovered three Dutch Marines had settled in our room – they left without a fight.

The forecast for Saturday was not brilliant and when we reached the summit of Na Gruagaichean the wind had picked up and it looked as if we were going to get rather damp. By the time we got to the bealach between Stob Coire a’ Chairn and Na Gruagaichean it was heaving down but we carried on, by past Stob Coire a’ Chairn and on up the rocky ridge of An Gearanach. Coming off the summit the rain stopped and the sun even attempted to come out so we continued up on to Stob Coire a’ Chairn where I sat down and tipped the water out of my boots. The track was then followed up on to Am Bodach and then back to the car which we had left at Mamore Lodge.

In the Trail Race pub we met the marines who had also been on Na Gruagaichean but they had been planning a night nav exercise for some more marines that were arriving on the Sunday, sounds like it was going to be fun.

Sunday we headed into Glen Coe and played on the little Buachaille, Stob Dubh and Stob Coire Raineach where I tried out my new winter boots, agony on the way down, which ultimately led to having a bunion removed, we then headed south back to York via the Fast Food Café at Tyndrum, a rather good weekend and another 6 ticks for Dolly.
