    Hi

I have the new 50 page guidance but haven’t read it yet. Penny tells me that from some BMC posts some climbers are already pushing to get out there. My personal feeling is that this confused announcement by the Government really leaves things as they are. If the outdoor community can’t restrain itself for a bit longer we risk damaging the hard won access rights and responsible reputation it has, and which leaves us largely self regulating. There are cases for walking in the further hills for a day, even perhaps for bouldering, even in underpasses, and they are valid but they are premature in my opinion. A bit more restraint will bring eventual rewards. The climbing and outdoor community should be partners in the conversation about access to high pressured beauty spots and climbing venues. When we go back we should be welcomed by the local community not seen as any sort of threat. If we take risks it must be when those who would help us accept the risk we may bring to them and most of all we must survive with honour and be able to look ourselves in the mirror having taken decisions that take account of the big picture and the legacy we leave.

Hope you are all fit and well John

Thanks Andrew, as discussed by email, it would be foolish to fly in the face of the guidance and other actions that are being taken now. Individuals can of course make their own decisions and its nearly time for the outdoors when we can all take part on solo or very small group activities at much lower risk.
To help put this in context for everyone, since Monday I have three clinicians in York alone now having to self isolate at home, I have just seen an email from a colleague in another large York practice with another three. I know for certain that my three have not been on contact with anyone with COVID 19 or travelled recently to a high risk area, one is at home under the family isolation guidance. Taking action to try and stem this virus protects the vulnerable and the workforce who care for the vulnerable. It is a great shame for the business’ that we support with our sport but I feel that it is up to Government action to give them assistance. Although I will be sending both Harrogate and Red Goat a personal message. Hope to see you all again soon, but not too soon and if so….stand two metres away 😉 Love, light and Peace as the great Spike Milligan would say.

    Hi,

Just wanted to emphasize the benefits of club membership re insurance. Members are covered for possible liabilities for outdoor activities, extending to non-mountaineering hobbies like canoeing. It even covers possible liabilities arising from your dog ! Importantly it covers you even when you are not taking part with the club. It remains cheaper than stand alone membership.

For an extra £15.20 you can extend your club membership to individual membership thereby adding greater personal accident insurance.

Details of both on the BMC website
