The walk on the 17th is going ahead as planned although it is now unlikely that Caroline can come along. The weather forecast is favourable and I’m equipped to find my way around the route so feel free to sign up far a pleasant day in the dales.

It’s about 12 miles and described as moderately challenging so it should be a gentle test of gear, endurance and navigation skills. The route takes us through Pateley Bridge at about half way which will conveniently be lunchtime. I suggest food is carried but a light pub lunch could be taken if wanted and if there’s room at the inn.

So far there’s only me, Derek and Becca confirmed. If anyone else would like to join in please get in touch here or on WhatsApp. I can pick up Becca and Derek too if there’s only the three of us but please let us know if you’re coming and able to car share or if you need a lift. The car park at the start point is relatively small.

    Cheers!

I will be driving across on Friday morning if the weather is good but will be at the bunkhouse after collecting the key by 4pm or in the Travellers Rest once I’ve claimed my bed and settled in. There is no mobile signal at the bunkhouse so changes of plan are best done with Wi-Fi at the pub.

Arrival: The bunkhouse is through the gate on the right side after crossing Rattlebeck Bridge and it is up the gravel ramp immediately on the left after entering through the gate. Car parking is on the gravel ramp and level area immediately in front of the bunkhouse. Other parking areas are available on the campsite but at the discretion of the owner. Please car share wherever possible to minimise personal cost and save the planet.

Bedrooms: There are two bunk rooms. Three tier bunks and not a huge amount of space so please be discrete and respectful of others. You will need a sleeping bag and maybe a pillow if you’re a softie like me. Take a headtorch and flip-flops/crocs for indoors and some may prefer to have ear-plugs in case of those club members that never snore.

Washrooms: The toilet and shower facilities are part of the same building but you have to walk around the path outside to get to them. The showers are coin operated and take 20p coins.

Kitchen and communal area: The kitchen has a kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge and an electric hob that takes a year to warm up. There is no crockery, cutlery or pans so take your own mug and cutlery as well as plates and cooking gear should you want to try and cook yourself a meal or use the microwave with ready meals. There is a basic indoor and an outdoor seating area as well as covered outdoor area for airing wet clothes.

Food: I recommend eating at the Travellers Rest pub, the food is good and they will be very pleased to see us on either night. The Ramblers Bar in Glenridding is hosting a wedding reception on Saturday evening so can’t offer any hospitality. A breakfast van will be on site beside the bunkhouse in the mornings from about 7:30. A full breakfast in a bun can be bought but a simple bacon butty costs £3.50 (card and cash accepted) although may not quite suit all preferred choices of diet. Hill food can be brought and kept in the fridge or bought at the general store in Glenridding.

Activities: The aim of the weekend is to get out into the hills and enjoy yourself. The pub in the evenings is the best place to make plans for Saturday and Sunday. The likely weather scenario and suitability of routes will be better understood. Giles intends to drive around to Pavey Ark to do Jack’s Rake and is looking for others to join him. There is some interest in Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag and I aim to stay local, probably heading up Helvellyn via Striding Edge and down Swirral Edge. I will also have my climbing gear if time and weather allow a local climb. I also understand there will be several fell runners amongst us so take your running gear if you’re that way inclined. Weather may dictate a less ambitious approach, however, there will always be something to go at. This is the first club weekend away for a good number of people so please all come along with an idea about what you would like to achieve and don’t hold back if you have something you’d particularly like to do. You can always post on here or WhatsApp prior to the event.

Sunday: We have to clear out of the bunkhouse on Sunday morning. Cars can be left at the campsite at the discretion of the owner. All hands are needed to tidy the place and leave it in reasonable order so please help where necessary and take home all your gear. If there are any breakages please let me know so I’m not embarrassed by a phone call after we’ve departed.

I’m looking forward to the weekend and to meeting everyone, some for the first time. If there are any other questions or suggestions please get in touch.

    Cheers,

    Dave M

There’s one place left. If you want it, it’s yours. Cost £30. I’ll WhatsApp you the payment details.

In a day or two I’ll be posting the full list of who’s going and more info.

    Hi Becca.

It’ll be great to see you on the walk. I think there are some heading to the walk from York, others from Easingwold. I’m presuming you live in York, in which case a lift will be no problem.

    Cheers! Dave M
