I will be attending.
Two details to note and consider:
1. There was a recent discussion about the excellent quality of the facilities / variety / and general ambience of Big Depot Leeds that led to a debate as to whether this venue should be the destination for the “traditional” Xmas climb. It certainly gets my vote.
2. Our joyous re-acquaintance with The Fox had me thinking that a Bishopthorpe Traverse is becoming very polished and worn, and resembles one of those Classic routes that are best avoided when even slightly damp. As iconoclasts and pioneers, can I suggest we consider an alternative approach to Trembling Madness; attempting a daring new line starting at An Mhadaidh (The Fox) and involving a run out and exposed foray down to Lendal (potentially placing runners at the Volunteers Arms, the Bay Horse, the York Tap and The Maltings). Risky, I know… but what a line…Matthew DSpectatorAll a bit weather dependent, Mr Carrier and I have a draft plan involving setting off a day (or even 2) earlier so we can have a warm-up in Borrowdale, or something… and having as look at Scafell (Moss Ghyll Grooves if we are feeling brave) or taking a look at Pikes Crag. There’s a couple of cracking routes on that side of Mickledoor.
Assuming we get phenomenal clear weather; and if my new bionic knee can stand up to any or all of this: a visit to Napes would seem like a good idea. I would echo Oli’s comments re the Needle. All the routes in that area are very polished and positively lethal when wet. But if the conditions are right, and I am fit enough, I would be up for a visit (and I know how to get off the top of the Needle safely).
If the weather decides to be awful, I can heartily recommend a stroll up to Pillar from Wasdale Head (never a disappointment). If the weather is truly awful then a visit to Brats Hill Stone circles (behind Illgill ) is a worthwhile objective. And of course, never forget that Nether Wasdale has sufficient hostelries to almost classify as a pub crawl venue.Matthew DSpectatorI have transferred funds.
…and I second the request for perfect conditions (and also add an additional requirement of being able to walk by then)
MatthewMatthew DSpectatorI am now definitely Covid-free (as is the rest of my household) so I shall be making my first tentative, wobbly steps up a wall this evening after quite a break. Leaving from Acomb / Foxwood vicinity (after a running an errand) at about 5ish, if anyone wants to collaborate on transport
MatthewMatthew DSpectatorLooking to do some multipitch on Tryfan East Face, Idwal, Milestone Buttress (conditions permitting) Happy to do a soggy walk up the Carnedds if the weather is poor (it would be good for the soul). Also potentially able to leave York on Friday morning to get a sneaky afternoon / evening warm-up in.
Over 18 and I am not a dog.
