Cala Gonone - Sardinia April 2006

Richard, Amy and my self took a last minute Ryanair special to Sardinia
Our destination was Cala Gonone.

Our aim was to climb, climb, climb and then do some more climbing! The local rock is Limestone but unlike our local stuff a high friction version!

First day, we headed to Fuili.
The weather as you can see was excellent.
Their was a superb range of grades for us from  4a to 6a, and for those who like their climbing with out hold up to 8c !!

We started with the easiest and worked up!

Left: Richard on La Pimpa (4c) le petit Bateau

After a brake for lunch on Fuili beach (all of 10m from the climbing!) we finished the day with some routes on West Beach.

The view of Fuili beach from the top of La Casa Segreta (5a) on West Beach.

Day 2: We headed back to Fuili, route of the day was Banane al Cioccolato (5a) and worth all of its 3 stars.
Left: Ricardo looking far too relaxed!
Day 3: Our destination was La Poltrona, 3 min by car from our accommodation and 3.5 min walk in, now that's what I call a holiday!

Again their was a great range of grades from 4c.

The route of the Day was 'Hay Jude' a three star 5c.

Day 4: We took a rest day and a walk to Cala Luna beach. There is plenty of climbing here but the grades started at 6c+ so we decided to leave the climbing here for another year. We sacked the return walk in favor of a sea taxi, the boat ride back to Cala Gonone gave a alternative perspective over the cost road.

Day 5: Budinetto, we met some very nice Italian people who asked Richard if he let me carry a knife! To which Richard replied "He is not that Simon" Few I say!
Day 6: Back to Fuili and the hottest weather so far on the trip!

Left: The main wall of La Poltrona. Richard has his eye on a route called Deutsch Wall!
Left: Amy on the first pitch of Vento in Poppa (5b,5c,5c) - Small wall of Cannonau area.

Also our last route of the holiday!

Well what can I say, Sardinia is just a great place to go! Easy to get around, friendly people, and fantastic food. The bars in Cala Gonone were excellent too and made our evenings all the better. For more information on Sardinia click here.

Will I go back?  You bet!
